The Stryker Rejuvenate hip replacement system promised greater customization for patients who had hip replacement surgery. The hip joint is made up of the femoral head (the top of the femur) as well as a concave indentation in the pelvis, called the acetabulum.

In simple terms, hip replacement systems generally work by inserting a cup into the acetabulum, a stem into the femur and a new head on top of the femur. Most hip replacement systems offer one option for a stem to fit inside of the femur, and have a one-piece neck that goes on top of the femur. The Stryker Rejuvenate system, on the other hand, allowed for a choice among 16 different necks and six different stems. This customization allowed surgeons to fit the hip replacement devices to the physiology of patients.

Unfortunately, the customization resulted in the Stryker Rejuvenate proving very dangerous to many patients. Metal-on-metal hip implant devices, in general, have proved to be dangerous as the medal can break down in the body as the different components of the joint rub against each other. The Stryker, however, may be worse than many of the other metal-on-metal devices on the market as a result of its unique design.

The Stryker Rejuvenate was recalled in 2012 because of the serious damage the hip replacement product was doing to patient’s health. The Stryker Rejuvenate not only has a high failure rate, but a variety of complications can occur including:

• Metallosis: A toxic build-up of metal ions in the body that can affect the thyroid, heart, nervous system, kidney, muscles, lymph nodes and liver.
• Bone fractures as a result of poor fixation of the implants.
• Osteolysis: Bone breakdown.
• Necrosis: Tissue death.
• Pseudo-tumors: A collection of fluid and metal flakes in the body that resembles a tumor.
